Clouds Before Candles

The day before my birthday

is shadowed, long, and selfish

as I burrow down and hope

the coming day will be enough

to make me feel fulfilled,

to cement the warmth of care

and comfort so deep within my heart

that I will cease to wonder

whether or not I am loved.
